Description of the project
The research project investigates adolescents’ news literacy. In particular, it examines the question of whether and to what extent this can be promoted with the help of school education programs. To this end, a systematic evaluation of workshops of the internationally established educational initiative Lie Detectors is conducted. The workshops are run by journalists in school classes in various European countries. The evaluation is based on a three-wave survey design (pretest, posttest, follow-up) of students in the context of an experimental/control group comparison. The standardized online survey is conducted in grades 8 and 9 at various schools in several federal states in Germany.
The research interest initially deals with a systematic analysis of the characteristics and relevant influencing factors on news literacy of adolescents. Furthermore, the question arises as to whether and to what extent news literacy of adolescents can be positively influenced in the long term by systematic educational programs at schools. In addition to generating fundamental insights into how young people deal with news and fake news, the findings thus also serve to sustainably improve school media education programs to promote media literacy.
